Last July 8 and 9, students of Leung Shek Chee college and the D-STEM team conducted the D-STEM workshop, wherein students were introduced to basic concepts in Artificial Intelligence, smart textiles, Polymeric Optical Fiber (POF) textiles and design led STEM.

The session started off with lectures by Dr. Jeanne Tan and Dr. Miu Wong, who lectured on the need of design led STEM for product innovation and of artificial intelligence in today's day and age. Following the lectures, a series of hands-on workshops were conducted wherein students were given the opportunity to learn about working with POF textiles, weaving using a loom and sewing. One student commented on how weaving was enjoyable and envisioned how she might weave textiles with different colors and textures.

After the workshops, students were tasked with the challenge of designing a fashion garment that utilized POF and artificial intelligence as a means to solve a problem. Using the techniques learnt in the workshops, students hand-crafted their prototypes using clothes donated by Theory, and ideated ways in which POF and AI could work together to solve a problem.

The workshop concluded with a fashion show that showcased the 24 groups of students who participated in the workshop. Ms. Bobo Fong, programme manager of the Hong Kong Design Centre's design incubation program, along with Dr. Tan served as judges in the runway competition. Ms Fong commended the students creative and innovative works that solved daily problems.
The D-STEM team looks forward to seeing the student's work in the near future!
