On April 20 students of Carmel Alison Lam Foundation Secondary School participated in the first of a multi-day workshop entitled “D-STEM with Interdiscplinary Practice of Artificial Intelligence and Design”. Led by Dr. Jeanne Tan and her team of designers and engineers from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), students were introduced to core topics surrounding the Design-led STEM education, including Artificial Intelligence, the British Design Council’s Double Diamond Design Framework (DDF) and Polymeric Optical Fiber (POF) textiles.

Following this introduction, teachers formed groups and jumped straight into Discover and Define stages of the DDF. Through brainstorming, online research and discussion, groups fleshed out daily-life problems experienced by both students and themselves, and came up with a variety of innovative solutions using POF textiles and AI. Some of these ideas include a color-changing bag for the deaf that enables them to communicate help and a uniform that changes color according to the student activity.

We look forward to seeing the development of the students work in the near future!
