Kicking off at the Jockey Club Innovation Tower, the DSTEM team hosted teachers from ten (10) different secondary schools around Hong Kong to learn about our upcoming two-day workshop entitled “D-STEM with Interdiscplinary Practice of Artificial Intelligence and Design”. The morning session started off with a speech by Dr. Jeanne Tan, who introduced the workshop and its goal to promote design-led STEM education in Hong Kong using the medium of textiles and artificial intelligence. This was followed by a series of talks by international speakers from both education and industry.

Anne Toomey, head of textiles at the Royal College of Art (RCA) London, talked about the future of design education and its integral role in STEM education, product development and industry practice. She then elaborated on the RCA and PolyU’s long-standing collaboration on research and teaching, and shared her excitement in working with the teachers over the next few workshops.
Kennis Chan, director of fashion and design incubation programs at Hong Kong Design Centre, showcased some of the centre’s initiatives in promoting design entrepreneurship and education in Hong Kong.
Maggie Luk, Incubation and Ecosystems Lead of the Mills Fabrica, and Timothy Muller, Lab supervisor at Fabrica, introduced the Fabrica lab where teachers and students would be spending the next few workshops in. In addition to the space, the Mills representatives also showcased some of The Mills’ various techstyle funded-projects and startups, along with various techstyle competition and design opportunities available for young aspiring designers.
