On November 28, secondary school teachers from ten (10) different schools around Hong kong participated in the first of a two day workshop entitled “D-STEM with Interdiscplinary Practice of Artificial Intelligence and Design”. Led by Dr. Jeanne Tan and her team of designers and engineers from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), teachers were introduced to core topics surrounding the Design-led STEM education, including Artificial Intelligence, the British Design Council’s Double Diamond Design Framework (DDF) and Polymeric Optical Fiber (POF) textiles.

Following this introduction, teachers formed groups and jumped straight into Discover and Define stages of the DDF. Through brainstorming, online research and discussion, groups fleshed out daily-life problems experienced by both students and themselves, and came up with a variety of innovative solutions using POF textiles and AI. Some of these ideas include a uniform that lights up when students get too close to each other and exceed covid social distancing rules, a dog collar that changes color in response to the dog’s emotions and a posture correcting seat that informs the user of correcting his posture.

The day ended with tutorials facilitated by Anne Toomey, textiles head at the Royal College of Art. Toomey shared her comments on how groups could further develop their ideas and her excitement at the innovative and creative ways groups tackled challenges in the current pandemic and in the age of social media and technology.
